Performing a Drug Intervention and Alcohol Intervention

What is A Drug Intervention and Alcohol Intervention?
Helping a drug and alcohol abuser or addict recognize the extent of his/ her problem is known as Drug and Alcohol Intervention. Generally, the drug and alcohol addicts do not realize the ugly side of their addiction. They just enjoy the momentary pleasure even if their problem is uncontrollable. This out of control problem forces the abuser to behave awkwardly in the society and family. These drug users need objective feedback on their behavior. It is through a non-judgmental, non-critical, systematic drug intervention process that the individual is able to see their own lifestyle choices.

It is very important to make the drug dependents understand the harm they are doing to themselves as well as their family members, friends and the whole society. Once they get to understand their problem, the next step is to take them to some professional counselor in order to seek help for alcohol dependence or drug addiction. It is the best process and tested method, which forces the the person to confront the need of help for the purpose of breaking down his/ her denial and motivate them to immediately seek treatment.

Why Intervention?
Sometimes, the patient persists drug dependency like alcohol, drugs, gambling or maybe an eating disorder, but they hide it and don’t realize the extent and consequences of their problems. Thus, deny it’s existence. If you get to know his/ her problem, then your role may prove crucial in solving the patient’s drug abuse.

You can get help through a process called intervention, which brings family, friends, co-workers and other supporters together with a skilled and professional facilitator to confront the addicted person in an honest and supportive way.

It is said that you cannot help an alcoholic or drug addict until they want help. But we do not really rely on it, as an intervention can help the drug abuser or addict, who for intentionally or purposedly does not seek help or sometimes does not realize the necessity of a professional help. A family or friend’s intervention can stop a person from continuing to engage in behaviors which will lead them to face hellish consequences in future.

Goal Of Drug Intervention
The goal of drug intervention is to make the person realize that he/ she should seek help for curing the problem. But drug and alcohol intervention is a difficult and delicate matter. So, it is very important to do it in a right manner without making the abuser feel guilty, otherwise the person may feel cornered and become defensive. The appropriate way is to take professional advise from some trained counselor and then move ahead with a determined strategy and timing for the specific drug intervention. Additionally, since people embarking on an alcohol or drug intervention often feel ambivalent and apprehensive, so it is important that they trust the interventionist, so that they can easily open up and ask for help.

Come Together
Chemical or drug dependency is not a disease. It’s just a state of mind, which compels the person to indulge in such activities. The abuser may not understand his/ her extent of problem, but then it becomes duty of the family members, friends or co-workers to understand individual’s problem and lend a helping hand in the form of intervention. It is the active involvement by concerned people, whose active and vigorous participation may help the addict, who is trapped in the vicious cycle of drug dependence.

Drug and Alcohol Intervention is the first step and Professional Treatment is the second. Both are necessary steps, but it is observed that intervention may treat up to 85% of addicted people, who seek professional help to get free of their chemical dependencies. So, it is important to come together and walk hand in hand with the drug abusers, as they desperately need a hand to hold and shoulder to depend instead of drug dependency.
